Wildlife and the 2012 Olympics

The Olympic Park in Stratford is the biggest development currently taking in place in London and London Wildlife Trust is working hard to make sure wildlife and the wider environment are taken into account during the build, the Games and beyond. We have a dedicated 2012 Officer and we run regular education and volunteering sessions in the area.

The Greenway
This is a great London Wildlife Trust project – The Greenway is a stretch of east London land that runs right by the Olympic site and we run volunteering sessions along it. Once totally neglected, we’re helping to transform it into something to be enjoyed by walkers, cyclists and lots of wild creatures. We’ve spotted greenfinches, blue and great tits, sparrows, blackbirds, butterflies, bees and dragonflies enjoying this important slice of green space.Find out more

The View Tube
The recently opened View Tube (made from lime green shipping containers) is a great new classroom with amazing Olympic views that sits on the Greenway near Pudding Mill Lane DLR station. Opening for business from early 2010, London Wildlife Trust has a base in the building along with the Field Studies Council, running science, geography, history and citizenship lessons for primary and secondary school classes. It’s a unique place for education sessions.  For more info and to make a provisional booking please contact Cairis Hickey

Trees for the Hosts
This is an exciting opportunity for schools in the five Host Boroughs to get involved with London 2012.  Wildlife friendly tree planting sessions will be led on school grounds that are in need of some life. Trees and session leaders will be provided free, all that is needed is willing children to help plant them and to learn about the value of trees to the environment.  Download more info below or contact Girish Rambaran.

Team challenges
Corporate volunteers
have been helping to transform the Greenway. Just recently, people from Defra, the Government Olympic Executive and Barclays have lent a hand on site. Conservation volunteering is a great team building exercise and a genuine treat away from the desk for office bound people.Find out more
